Health Canada has issued a risk communication to health care professionals, notifying them of a review of Tavneos (avacopan), a medication used in combination with other treatments for adults with severe ANCA (active anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody)-associated vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disease that can affect the kidneys and other organs.
While the review is underway, Tavneos is not being prescribed to new patients. If you are currently taking Tavneos, continue taking your medication and speak with your healthcare provider. Your nephrologist or other health care professional can best determine whether continuing this treatment is appropriate for you based on your individual health needs.
“We understand that news about a medication review can raise questions for patients and families,” said Elizabeth Myles, National Executive Director of The Kidney Foundation of Canada. “Patients should not make changes to their treatment without first speaking to their healthcare provider. We encourage anyone with questions or concerns to discuss their individual circumstances with their healthcare team”
At this time, Health Canada is continuing their review of available evidence, and additional information is expected as the process unfolds. The Kidney Foundation of Canada remains committed to providing timely, trustworthy information to the kidney community and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
