Living with kidney disease can create significant financial challenges for patients and their families. From medication costs and travel expenses to lost income and caregiving responsibilities, the economic impact can be substantial and long-lasting.
These challenges are exacerbated by inequitable government support that varies widely across provinces and territories, particularly for those requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant, leaving patients and families with additional financial burdens based on where they live.
To help shine a light on the financial burden of kidney disease, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Association of Nephrology Social Workers (CANSW) are collaborating to update the 2018 Report on the Financial Burden of Kidney Disease. The new report will capture the current financial realities faced by Canadians living with kidney disease today and help strengthen advocacy efforts to improve support for patients and families nationwide.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey informing this update. Your insights are critical to understanding the real-world financial impact of kidney disease and will help drive meaningful change by informing policy discussions on equitable access to financial supports.
