The Summer Camp for Children, located in the municipality of Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, welcomes each year over 45 children (aged 6 to 18), all at different stages of illness: pre-dialysis, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or transplanted.
Thanks to the support of our generous donors and partners, the children are given the opportunity to experience new adventures and make new friends while being accompanied by a fantastic medical team: 4 nurses from CHU Sainte-Justine and the Montreal Children's Hospital and a nephrologist who ensure medication treatment and oversee the general health and well-being of the children.
This week of summer camp also provides parents with a well-deserved break, assured that their child is being cared for by a dedicated team. These shared moments among young dialysis or transplant patients also allow participants to know that they are not alone in facing kidney disease and that an entire community supports them.
Camps often get their start at the initiative of supporters such as Dr. Marie-Josée Clermont, who led the development of the pediatric camp in Quebec. After starting her career in pediatrics, Dr. Clermont turned her attention to nephrology. After she participated in a truly inspiring dialysis camps in New York State, she felt that children in Quebec deserved to benefit from the same experience, and so Dr. Clermont decided to create a summer camp for young kidney patients in her home province.
The Kidney Foundation acknowledges the support of the many donors that make the Kidney Kids Camps possible.
