Home Hemodialysis Utility Grant Program (HUG)

Region:
Alberta South

The Home Hemodialysis Utility Grant (HUG) Program is a program funded by the Government of Alberta and administered by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Northern Alberta & The Territories and Southern Alberta Branches. The program reimburses patients for the increased costs of utilities (water and electricity) related to home hemodialysis treatment. The program aims to remove financial barriers to home hemodialysis. As a patient, you will be asked to complete the Home Hemodialysis Utility Grant (HUG) form provided to you by your AHS Home dialysis team member when you go the hospital for your quarterly routine visit. The completed forms will then be provided to the Kidney Foundation respective programs to determine the reimbursement amount.

If you want to be part of the HUG Program, AHS must have your written consent to give The Kidney Foundation certain information. This is to find out the kind of grant you are eligible for. Here is the information AHS will only share with your consent:

  • That you are a home hemodialysis patient

  • How often you dialyze

  • The length of your dialysis

  • Your dialysis flow rate
