The Kidney Foundation of Canada congratulates Dr. Peter Nickerson on his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada on June 26, 2026.
A world-renowned transplant nephrologist and researcher at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Nickerson is recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the field of kidney transplantation.
Dr. Nickerson’s groundbreaking research has changed the standard of care for kidney transplantation globally, improving transplant success rates and reducing the risk of organ rejection. He also played a key role in developing national programs for hard-to-match kidney patients, expanding access to life-saving transplants for Canadians.

The Kidney Foundation is proud to have supported Dr. Nickerson’s work early on, providing funding for research that revolutionized donor-recipient matching. Over the years, he has also generously contributed his expertise to the Foundation through our Research Council, the KRESCENT program, and advocacy initiatives.
Dr. Nickerson was also awarded the Medal for Research Excellence in 2018 and the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025, among many other honours.
His appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada is a well-deserved recognition of his decades of leadership, innovation, and commitment to improving the lives of Canadians living with kidney disease.
