Isaiah's Story

I get to go out and enjoy a unique experience, and just get to act silly and be normal.

Hi, my name is Isaiah, I’m 11 years old and I have Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus. You are probably wondering what it is or if I take insulin. The answer is no.  My condition is to do with my kidneys.  They don’t concentrate water, so I get thirsty and drink up to 6 litres of water a day, and that keeps me hydrated; I also have frequent bathroom breaks, and I’m on a low sodium diet. As much as this affects me every day, I don’t let this stop me from doing the things I love; playing different sports, being adventurous outdoors like camping, boating, fishing, bike rides to name a few.

I have been able to attend Kidney Kids Kamp the last 2 summers.  This has become a highlight to my summer as I meet and play with other kids with kidney problems, I get to go out and enjoy a unique experience, and just get to act silly and be normal. My favourite thing at Kidney Kamp is meeting new friends and seeing old ones, white water rafting, high ropes, and all other activities.

I know my parents worry while I am gone, but we have nurses that attend the camp, and really, my parents should just enjoy the few days break as they are able to get full nights rests! I know it’s not always easy taking care of me and worrying about my health, but I’m in good hands at camp.

Sometimes it feels like I’m alone and my friends at school don’t understand why I need to take care of my kidneys. This is why attending camp is special to me. I get to share my story and be around other people who are going through similar stuff. It feels special and I know I’m not alone.
