Tom's Story

While Tom has been a dedicated volunteer and donor for many years, he wanted to ensure The Foundation’s mission continues beyond his lifetime.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada deeply appreciates the generosity and unwavering support of its donors. One notable donor, Tom Meade, shares a profound personal connection to The Foundation’s mission.

Tom has lived with a genetic form of kidney disease, which profoundly shaped his life. As a father to two daughters and grandfather to four grandchildren, he understands firsthand the transformative impact of living with this condition. Fifteen years ago, Tom was fortunate to receive a life-saving kidney transplant, offering him a second chance at life and the opportunity to cherish moments with his family that he once feared he might never experience.

Tom’s journey with The Kidney Foundation began during one of the most challenging chapters of his life. Diagnosed with kidney disease, he was faced with the arduous prospect of undergoing a transplant. Yet, his experience was marked by invaluable support and guidance that eased the overwhelming process. Through The Foundation, he discovered a wealth of educational resources that helped him better understand his condition and confidently navigate the transplant path. While Tom didn’t personally require financial assistance, he was moved by knowing The Foundation was there to provide aid to patients facing travel expenses and lodging costs during treatment—a testament to the organization’s vital role in supporting families affected by kidney disease.

This experience inspired Tom to give back to The Foundation that had been a lifeline for him. What started as gratitude soon evolved into a broader commitment to help others in similar situations. Tom began volunteering at his local chapter, developing connections with other kidney patients and creating bonds of mutual understanding. Over time, his dedication led him to join The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s National Board of Directors, a role through which he witnessed the powerful impact The Foundation has on patients and their families—providing not only essential resources but also hope and relief during life’s most trying moments.

While Tom has been a dedicated volunteer and donor for many years, he wanted to ensure The Foundation’s mission continues beyond his lifetime. Several years ago, he and his wife decided to leave a gift in their will to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, establishing a lasting legacy that will support research and patient care for years to come. This decision required no compromises to his current lifestyle but gave Tom profound peace knowing his contribution will help build a brighter future. His vision for this gift is clear: he dreams of a world where advancements in kidney research lead to improved treatments—even a cure—so future generations, including his daughters and grandchildren, can live free from the challenges he endured.

Tom’s commitment extends beyond his own contributions. He is passionate about encouraging others to consider leaving a legacy gift to The Kidney Foundation. Tom and Barbara firmly believe that collective action can drive groundbreaking discoveries and ensure care for those in need, creating a healthier future for all.

Together, and with the dedication of individuals like Tom and you, we can continue to save lives—one patient, one family, at a time.
