New Survey Aims to Clarify Financial Burden of Kidney Failure

Canadians navigating kidney failure often face serious financial challenges. Dialysis in particular often leads to a drop in income just as out-of-pocket costs begin to rise, such as transportation to receive care, medication, and others.

Across Canada, government coverage and financial support for people who need dialysis or a kidney transplant vary widely. These differences can leave patients and families facing an additional financial burden depending on where they live.

To help shine a light on these inequities, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Association of Nephrology Social Workers (CANSW) have launched a new survey of Canadians affected by kidney disease. The survey will help capture the current financial realities of people living with kidney failure.

The results will be used to update the 2018 Report on the Financial Burden of Kidney Disease and strengthen advocacy efforts aimed at improving support for patients and families across the country.
