Remembering Cynthia “Cindy” Cherry: Kidney Donor, Advocate, Kidney Foundation Champion.

It is with profound sadness that The Kidney Foundation of Canada acknowledges the passing of Cynthia “Cindy” Margaret Cherry, a beloved supporter of The Kidney Foundation, living organ donor, and beacon of hope within the organ donation and transplantation community.

Cindy's unwavering commitment to organ donation and transplantation has left an enduring mark on all who knew her. She selflessly donated her kidney to her brother Tim over four decades ago, embodying the spirit of giving that defined her life.

“How fortunate am I that I could help Tim in his battle against kidney disease?” Cindy recalled over 40 years after she donated her left kidney to her brother. Listen, I had the opportunity to help Tim get his health back on track and let me tell you if there was anything I could do to help him, no questions asked, I was going to do it.”

Her generosity and compassion extended beyond her immediate family, touching countless lives through her advocacy and support.

Through Cindy's visionary efforts, The Kidney Foundation formed a groundbreaking partnership with the Western Hockey League (WHL) for a three-year campaign titled “RE/MAX Presents: WHL Suits Up to Promote Organ Donation” between 2017 and 2019. Cindy knew that this partnership had the potential to significantly raise the profile of organ donation.

“If these games make one person donate – or even just sign their card and start a conversation, this means the world to me and my family. As Dad says, if it can happen to my family, it can happen to yours. So, let’s work together so everyone who needs a transplant gets a transplant.”

It did, and the partnership also generated over $600,000, which was invested in Kidney Foundation programs supporting patients, families, and organ donors. Cindy's dedication to this cause helped improve countless lives and created a wave of enthusiasm across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba as supporters registered as organ donors.

As a living kidney donor, Cindy never questioned whether donating was the correct decision.

“We all have two kidneys, but we only need one. Too many Canadians are needlessly suffering. If there is something you can do to help your family, friend, neighbour, or just someone in your community, why wouldn’t you do it? Canadians need to do better.”

She took her passion for organ donation and transplantation directly to hospitals in Ontario, where she connected directly with patients and potential organ donors and helped them navigate the system. Her message to them never wavered.

Organ Donation Saves Lives…Talk to Your Family About Your Wishes

“Be your own advocate. Don’t be afraid to take control of your journey because your health is at stake. And don’t be afraid to ask your loved ones to donate – you will be surprised at the response you get.”

As we mourn the loss of Cindy, we also celebrate the incredible life she led and the profound difference she made. Her legacy is one of selflessness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to helping others. Cindy's spirit will continue to inspire us all to strive for a world where everyone understands, respects, and supports organ donation.
