Jessica Papineau

Jessica is a neonatal nurse and has been working at CHUS for several years. At the age of 12, she was diagnosed with Tuberous sclerosis also known as Bourneville's disease. Among her symptoms were polycystic kidneys and liver. She has had regular follow-ups, and it wasn’t until after her second pregnancy that Jessica started losing her kidney function.

In 2017, her kidney function was down to about 20%, so she started asking her family and friends to see if anyone was interested and compatible to be her kidney donor. Luckily, her mother turned out to be a match and they started the tests and the steps for a living donor transplant. Unfortunately, the pandemic delayed the process and by 2021, her kidneys were functioning at around 10% and became too enlarged to undergo a transplant.

Jessica has been on hemodialysis since January 2023 and is now awaiting her transplant surgery which has been pushed until early 2024. During all this time, Jessica has been lucky enough to have a sister like Roxanne Papineau who is a nutritionist specializing in kidney failure. Roxanne guided Jessica through the early stages of her condition. This enabled her to limit the symptoms of the disease and slow down the loss of kidney function.

Jason is a husband and father from Stoney Creek, Ontario. He experienced acute kidney failure in 2017 after a pulmonary embolism, and had a crash start on hemodialysis. After six months on hemodialysis, he switched to peritoneal dialysis. Following a renal diet and combining exercise with his dialysis treatments, Jason‘s kidney function improved from 3% to 29% during the one-year period that he was on dialysis. Jason now lives with 25% kidney function and, along with exercise, has worked with his doctor and dietitians for five years to delay any loss to his current kidney function. Jason is currently a Kidney Foundation Peer Support volunteer, and Peer Support group facilitator.
