Harvey's Story

I cannot think of a better way to leave a lasting gift.
Years ago I had a chance encounter with a former executive director of The Kidney Foundation, which not only inspired me to join the organization, but to also leave a legacy to support people impacted by kidney disease.

Having spent decades as a consultant, I was asked to assist with the Foundation’s restructuring process, which I saw as an opportunity to use my skills in organizational management to make a great charity become even more effective.  This led to my serving as a branch board member and eventually becoming branch president, followed by a position on the National Board of Directors, where I was extensively involved in policy redevelopment.

As I engaged with the Foundation, I found the work and mission to be incredibly compelling.  I was also struck by the commitment of people who have been affected by kidney disease and how eager they always were to share their stories and help others dealing with similar issues.  In fact, I found that my own commitment grew the longer that I worked with this wonderful group of staff and volunteers.

Although I do not have kidney disease, nor does anyone in my family, my admiration for The Kidney Foundation really made me want to do something beyond volunteering my time, making donations and attending events.  When the past president – a woman much younger than me – passed away quite suddenly, she left a legacy gift in her will to the Foundation, and it struck me immediately that it was something that I should consider doing.  It took my wife and me a few years to get around to updating our wills, but when we did, it was incredibly easy to add a bequest.  Given that kidney disease will be affecting more and more Canadians in the years ahead, I cannot think of a better way to leave a lasting gift.

Today – twelve years later – I continue to participate in events and activities hosted by The Kidney Foundation, and remain inspired by its commitment to research, the impact of its programs and the staff’s dedication.
