New Peer Support Group Connects Canadians Living with Glomerulonephritis

The Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Connect Peer Support Groups are growing once again. Starting in July, people living with glomerulonephritis or GN will have a chance to connect with others who are affected by GN. Glomerulonephritis, also referred to as GN or nephritis, is a group of diseases that injure the part of the kidney that filters blood (called glomeruli).

“There are several types of GN including Membranous, IgAN, FSGS and Minimal Change disease amongst others,” said Brian MacLaren, Peer Support Group Facilitator. “It is often very difficult to manage and can be quite painful. In my own case I was diagnosed with “Primary “Membranous GN” in 2003. This is a b cell disease that came on quickly and caused a 60lb weight gain in one month,” he added.

“There are many types of and causes of GN,” said Craig Lindsay, Director of Programs and Public Policy for the Ontario Branch. “As we enhance the offerings of our peer support program, a group committed to supporting those affected by GN and their family care partners and the unique issues they experience is truly important,” Lindsay added.

“Many people experience a variety of symptoms that can be very challenging for both patient and nephrologists, said MacLaren. “With thanks to research, we are learning much about the disease from initiation through novel treatments.”  This group will help patients can gain a better understanding through education and support from others who share a similar experience.

Through participation in support groups, kidney patients of all stages can:

  • take an active role in managing their diagnosis

  • increase their knowledge of treatments

  • learn coping skills

  • become a member of the larger kidney community

Peer support is a free service offered by The Kidney Foundation. Group support is delivered online so that it is accessible to everyone coast to coast. Patients and caregivers can also access 1 to 1 support if that is preferred.

Medical professionals play a key role, providing treatment information and answering questions about the disease and treatment options, but they don’t have lived experience, and that’s where peer support – talking with someone who has a shared lived experience – can make all the difference.

No matter where you are on your journey with kidney disease, help is available. Call 1-866-390-7337 or email our Programs team for information about group meeting registration. The Kidney Foundation also offers one-on-one phone sessions with trained volunteers.
