Request a Test

Did you know, you could have kidney disease and not even know it? Early stages of kidney disease can get worse without symptoms at first. That's why Canadians should ask their doctor for a test to catch it early.

During regular check ups, doctors do not typically check your kidneys. However, they can easily perform a simple test that only takes a few minutes. Here are two types of tests your doctor could run at your request:

  1. Blood Test: A blood test measures your serum creatinine level, which indicates how well your kidneys are filtering blood.
  2. Urinalysis: A urinalysis looks for a protein in your urine called albumin. The more albumin detected, the greater risk you have of losing kidney function over time.

By learning how your kidneys are doing, you can implement changes today to protect your kidneys from damage. Eating well and exercising can help lower your risk of kidney disease and even slow its progression. Until your next doctor’s appointment, take care of your kidneys with these resources:

Special thank you to APTN and NCI-FM for helping us encourage Canadians to request a test.
