Dr. Mathieu Lemaire Appointed New Program Director at KRESCENT

On behalf of The Kidney Foundation of Canada (KFoC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (CIHR-INMD) and the Canadian Society of Nephrology (CSN), we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mathieu Lemaire to the position of Program Director of the Research Scientist Core Education and National Training (KRESCENT).

Dr. Lemaire received his MD in 2004 from McGill University and completed his pediatric nephrology training at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in 2009. From 2011 to 2014, he participated in the KRESCENT program as a Fellow while pursuing his PhD in Investigative Medicine at Yale University. Bringing back his new expertise, he has now worked at SickKids for 10 years as a pediatric nephrologist and scientist. Dr Lemaire also participated in the KRESCENT program as an early career investigator from 2017-2020. His expertise in both research and clinical practice will provide a valuable, patient-focused perspective for current and future KRESCENT trainees.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lemaire gained invaluable experience in research, education, and leadership that we are beyond excited for him to bring to the KRESCENT Program. His broad experiences and research interests have made him a balanced, well-informed mentor and supervisor. This is particularly helpful for the KRESCENT Program, where trainees come in with various research interests and levels of previous knowledge.

Dr. Lemaire takes over from Dr. Todd Alexander, who led the KRESCENT Program since 2018. During Dr. Alexander’s tenure, the curriculum was revamped, the involvement of patient representatives was strengthened, the scope of trainees was broadened to include undergraduate students, and the issues of diversity and equity became key program tenets. Importantly, KRESCENT also became more secure financially by securing generous support from a CIHR Health Research Training Program grant.

As a two-time KRESCENT Program participant himself, Dr. Lemaire envisions continuing to improve the program by bringing new tools and resources to trainees, enhancing the focus on patient-centred care/research, and encouraging young researchers with diverse backgrounds.

Dr. Lemaire brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to help KRESCENT achieve its mission of empowering early-career kidney research scientists and reinventing the future of kidney health research in Canada.
