Creating a Brighter Future for Kidney Patients

The design journey began with a heartfelt request. Kacy DeLong, former owner of DeLong Designs Metalworking, reached out to Amos Pewter with a meaningful request: to reimagine an ornament that would raise awareness and funds for those affected by kidney disease.

Years earlier, Kacy had designed a unique heart-shaped ornament that subtly fused the forms of a heart and a kidney—a powerful symbol of love, life, and the bond between donor and recipient. As we began the creative process for a new design, we found ourselves returning to that original concept. The idea of two shapes becoming one resonated deeply—it reflected the incredible connection between two people brought together by the act of donation.

Looking for further inspiration, we turned to the Kidney Foundation of Canada’s logo. Its clean, geometric shapes echoed the form of kidneys—but we saw something more: butterfly wings. The butterfly, a universal symbol of transformation, felt like the perfect metaphor for this journey of healing and hope.

To create a complete butterfly, you need two kidneys—two people. Only when one is reversed and joined with the other do the shapes align, forming something whole and beautiful. It speaks to the transformative connection between donor and recipient, two individuals coming together to create something new.

The final design is more than an ornament. It’s a symbol of unity, compassion, and second chances—a tribute to lives changed and new beginnings made possible through the power of giving.
