Dr. Mitchell L. Halperin

1999 Medal for Research Excellence
St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto
Dr. Mitchell L. Halperin is head of the Division of Nephrology at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. One of Canada's leading renal physiologists, he has been an active investigator of kidney disease for more than 30 years.

His most recent work has examined the relationship between kidney disease and high blood pressure in the context of electrolyte regulation by the kidneys. Through funding by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Dr. Halperin's research has found that a diet low in potassium can lead to salt retention which, when combined with high blood pressure, accelerates the progression of kidney disease.

An internationally recognized educator in nephrology, Dr. Halperin has travelled to Russia, South Africa and Brazil - "bringing science to the bedside" - teaching the importance of patient care, particularly in the area of intensive care.

We are proud to honour him with the 1999 Medal for Research Excellence for his important contributions to improving the lives of people living with kidney disease.
